My teeth are crooked, and I get lots of cavities. Could braces help both?

My teeth are crooked, and I get lots of cavities. Could braces help both?

Absolutely! Cavities are caused by plaque, and if teeth are difficult to clean and floss because they are crooked or overlapping, that plaque can lead to decay.

That being said, you have to be especially vigilant when you're wearing braces, because there are more nooks and crannies where plaque can build up. I tell patients with braces to be sure to use fluoride toothpaste, limit sugary foods and liquids, and have their teeth cleaned professionally at least three times a year.

Since flossing with braces (or very crooked teeth) can be a challenge, I also recommend investing in a high-quality electric toothbrush. If you can't brush after every meal, rinsing with water is a great second choice.
